  • Tom’s at the courthouse applying for a job.  His competition for the job is a former VP of a company that was shut down due to a scandal.

3.6   “She Went That A’Way”   July 12

  • Adrian speaks with Ricky’s foster mother, Margaret.
  • Amy’s still in New York City.
  • In news that should shock no one, Ricky’s sleeping with a new girl.

3.7   Title Unknown    July 19

3.8   “The Sounds of Silence”   July 26

  • George has planned a special date with Anne at a nice restaurant, but he balks at the expensive prices.  But they’re not going to get the date anyway, as Anne has to cancel because she has to go see Mimsy, who’s sick. First, though, Anne will have to find George, who’s not answering his phone; she asks Ashley for help.
  • “Chicken Little”
  • Two couples go on a double date: Griffin and a new guy, Peter; and Grace and Grant.  (Yes, this means Grant and Ashley have split up.)  Grace arranged for Griffin and Peter to go out, but things become awkward when Peter says he isn’t gay. But before the night’s over, Peter makes a confession.  We’ll also meet Peter’s dad, and learn something surprising about Peter’s parents.
  • There’s a guy living in the Bowman guest house.  (Our best guess — and it’s only a guess — is that it’s Jack.)

“My Girlfriend’s Back”

  • There’s a party at Ben’s house. Ashley attends reluctantly.  Griffin’s surprised Ashley is speaking to him. He has bigger problems, though, as Peter attends the party — with Haylie, a girl who appears more interested in Ben than anyone else. Later, Griffin has a sleepover with two people.
  • Ben’s mad at Henry and Alice for pregnancy related reasons.  Ben hopes to speak to Amy soon, as she wants to speak to him face to face upon returning home.  But when the long-awaited event finally happens, Ben’s surprised by what Amy tells him.
  • Grace stays up til 4 in the morning with a boy (Grant?) in her room.  They talk and make out.

“Lady Liberty”

  • Amy’s still in New York.  She talks to Madison on the phone; then, her 2 New York friends want her to go out to a club where everyone dresses in their pajamas.  One of Amy’s friends uses Amy’s phone to send Ricky a picture of Amy at the club.  Ricky responds to the picture by sleeping with a new girl.  Oh, and it’s Amy’s birthday, but will her friends or family or (especially) Ricky remember?
  • Ben was fired for attacking Ricky.  Why did Ben attack Ricky? Maybe it had something to do with the fact that Ricky and Amy are considering becoming a couple.  Ben and Adrian consider faking an engagement to make Ricky and Amy jealous.
  • Dr. Fields and Leo meet up at a restaurant.

General Season 3 Spoilers

  • Depending on how you look at it, this summer’s episodes can be considered either season 5 or the first half of season 3.

  • Steve Schirripa (Ben’s dad Leo) is now a series regular.
  • Emmy award winner Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos) guest stars.  Other guest stars include Joel Murray (Mad Men; Dharma & Greg); Shoshana Bush (Dance Flick); Maiara Walsh (Desperate Housewives); and Bristol Palin playing herself, when she and Amy both attend a music program for teen moms.
  • Ben and Amy will be reconnecting — and by “reconnecting” we mean they’ll be kissing again and Amy will reconsider starting something new with Ben. Amy will admit her love for Ricky, but just what does she mean by that?

The Secret Life of the American Teenager Season 2 Episode Recaps

‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’: Not exactly a top party school

Source: Zap2it.com Recaps

For some reason, it never struck me before the opening scenes on tonight’s “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” that so many of the kids in that school have lost a parent. I actually think the notion of having a support group for those kids makes complete and total sense… no wonder the meeting didn’t go well.

Madison wasn’t really a help in that conversation, but Madison is never really a help with anything, is she? She certainly ought to have been smarter than to allow a picture of a very pregnant Amy in the yearbook. Not a terribly friend-like thing to do, was it? And, as Madison and Lauren remind us every time they appear on the show – you know, once every four episodes – they’re Amy’s best friends.

Forget that crazy Madison though, let’s head straight to the meat of things – Ben and the prostitute, aka Betty, aka the Sausage King’s potential new queen. Ben spilled the beans tonight about Betty’s occupation, and it turns out that Leo knew all along. Leo made the claim that Betty has quit her one-time profession. I’m not quite sure I accept that, do you?

Elsewheres, wouldn’t life be great if Amy was slightly less whiny? How can she possibly be surprised that she has classes to make up? Surely she recognized that there were only so many classes she could miss in a school year before getting an incomplete. Oh, wait, we’re talking about Amy here, the girl who thinks that she can leave her child for two months to go to Italy, leave her job for two months to go to Italy, and that she deserves a part-time job that gives her full benefits and where they watch her child for free, and, and, and. Once you consider that, her shock makes complete sense.

You can fight me as much as you want about George and Anne not being right for each other, but come on, you can’t actually argue that David is the right guy. He’s already done the surprise house thing and now this week he did the surprise parent meeting. What, exactly, is wrong with that man? Is he so insecure with who he is and his standing with Anne that he can’t be upfront about anything? Anne already had a deceptive spouse in George, does she want to go through that again? She can’t marry David. She shouldn’t marry David. You know I’m right.

Bits and pieces:

  • How great was it that Ashley set George straight tonight? That alleged troublemaker has been quiet for way too long. Too bad George didn’t take the advice.
  • Good for Ricky, wanting John with him on his first night in his new place. Not surprised that Adrian couldn’t handle it though.
  • Is it in any way possible that Adrian’s parents were okay with her having made an offer on George’s house? Shouldn’t there have been some sort of discussion about that?
  • Does anyone else out there have a lot of trouble seeing Grace as being in mourning? I know that she claims to be in mourning, but nothing else about her really gives off that vibe. I don’t know what I want, but I’m sure it starts with dark, modest clothes, not bright low-cut tops and miniskirts.
  • Molina is leaving the school… and there was a moment I thought that he was supposed to be a real character on the show (after that he disappeared for months on end).
  • Does anyone else get the sense that tonight’s episode was supposed to have been last season’s finale?

‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’: Secrets and lies and foolishness

Source: Zap2it.com Recaps

The Secret Life of the American Teenager” has more secrets running around than you can shake a stick at, and they don’t all revolve around the American teenager. At some point they’re going to need to start issuing a scorecard and program with the show. It’s just great, isn’t it?

I can’t imagine what world Amy lives in that she really thinks that she can go to Italy. That whole thing about “exposing” John to other cultures almost sounded like she believed… almost. Plus, Ricky was right, Amy can’t take John out of the country without Ricky’s permission. She could lie to Passport Control and say that Ben was the father, and that seems like the kind of thing she would do, but breaking a federal law like that may be a worse idea than her quitting her daycare job to go to Italy. And that, friends, is a terrible idea.

I think though that I’m beginning to understand where Anne is coming from a little bit more when she tries to do things like get Amy to make her eggs. Anne definitely comes across a little harsh and whiny from time to time, but it seems as though she’s just doing it to make Amy hear what she, Amy, sounds like. Or, it could be that Anne’s just as irresponsible as Ricky’s foster mom thinks she is.

Ummm… I don’t know how to ask this, but is Betty still a “woman of the night?” Does she still work in the “oldest profession?” Is she still “sleeping with men who leave cash on the nightstand and who tip her based on her performance in that piece of furniture that generally sits next to the nightstand?” I’m only asking because when Ben asked Betty about her arrival time in court she flubbed the answer and then there was that conversation later with Tom. Obviously she’s not a court reporter, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that she’s still getting paid to do what they can teach you all about in Bologna. Can you imagine what the conversation between Leo and Ben is going to be once Ben finds out about Betty’s job (whether it’s current or not)?

Ricky. He wants to be legally emancipated and thinks that his being a 16-year-old father shows that he’s all grown up? Call me kooky, but it’s kind of odd to use teenage pregnancy as an explanation of just how responsible you are. Yes, it’s great that he’s trying to work more over the summer and Leo’s getting him an apartment is nice (especially such a huge place), but that doesn’t mean that he ought to be emancipated.

Why did Grace tell everyone that George lied about the vasectomy? George helped her when she was feeling horrific, gave her a shoulder to cry on, and that’s how she repays him? That girl is going to completely mess up my plans for George and Anne getting back together, and that’s not the sort of thing I can accept. I don’t know what I’m going to do about it, but it’s not going to be pretty.

Ben telling Amy about the vasectomy was wholly predictable, as was – sadly – the fact that he’d do it in awkward, horrible fashion. Far less predictable was the fact that Ashley would back her father’s vasectomy lie to Amy. There’s going to be a reckoning in that household awfully soon.

The Secret Life of the American Teenager Episode Recap 2.4 “The Summer of Our Discontent”

‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’ contemplates Bologna, Italy

Source: Zap2it.com Recaps

Kenbaumann_secretlifeoftheamericanteenager_s3_290For people who have learned all about teen pregnancy, there’s still an awful lot of sex and sex talk on “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.” Left and right, everyone seems to be doing it, have done it, want to do it, and/or learn all about how to do it in Bologna. In my high school there was certainly no talk of Bologna, I’ll tell you that much.

Is it just me or does Leo seem terribly different this season? I don’t know whether it’s the addition of Betty to his life or a real character change for him, but there’s something different. I know that Betty is apparently a hooker, but I don’t think it’s possible that Leo is suffering from syphilis, there has to be something else at play with the changes in him. For instance, I really didn’t see Leo telling Ben to take a break from Amy coming. Sure, that’s not exactly what he said, but it was strongly implied.

For her part, Amy should definitely not be heading to Bologna without John, and how is she going to go there for an extended period and leave her job? Surely she hasn’t amassed several weeks of vacation time already.

Poor Ben, making that phone call to Adrian tonight. I thought that after last week that girl was done with her über-sexual ways. Apparently not. She was right though when she made it pretty clear to Ben that if he went to Bologna and left Ricky and Amy alone for the summer, things could happen between the two (even if Ricky and Adrian made some sort of promise to each other).

I understand why Ben wanted Adrian’s opinion – she is “worldly” (and perhaps has been to Bologna), but couldn’t he have predicted that Adrian would tell someone about the conversation and that someone would tell Amy? Adrian cut out the middleman telling Amy herself, but Ben definitely should have foreseen that possibility before talking to Adrian.

Grace was back in the saddle today, heading off to her first day of school following her father’s death. Why, I beg of you, did her mom try to stop her from going back to school? Grace took the death horribly, far worse than either her mother or her brother, and there she was finally ready to get out of bed, put on her usual 12 pounds of makeup, and go back to school. Why would her mom want to stop that from happening? “Gee, honey, I’ve begged you for a week to do something more than stay in bed suggesting that you killed your father, but do you really want to do something so… appropriate?”

Lastly, let me continue my quest to put Anne and George back together. How right was George when he pointed out to Anne that she was overwhelmed with Amy, John, and her own pregnancy? How right was George when he pointed out that David should have been there to help Anne? George knows Anne, he knows what she needs, and even though – as he pointed out – he set the bar pretty low initially, he seems to have improved. I’m not saying he should be forgiven, only Anne can make that judgment, but I’m still pulling for those crazy kids. Plus, and let’s not forget this, George didn’t have that little snip-snip operation. He just may be the father of Anne’s child. Woo-hoo!

Odds and ends:

  • George – good guy, how about that conversation with Grace. I think he’s a smart guy who just acts like a fool most of the time.
  • David – that chat with Anne at the end of the episode – best proposal ever. You can’t tell me you’d rather see him with Anne than George, can you?
  • Call me kooky, but I like Jack and Grace. However, I don’t think that his drinking storyline is done yet.
  • Really, Bologna? I had no idea.
  • Betty – what are we thinking there? Did the relationship with Leo start out as a professional one and turn into more or did Leo not know? If he didn’t know and doesn’t still, would it make a difference to him? If Ben knew about Betty’s work, would he try and hire her?

The Secret Life of the American Teenager Episode 2.03 Recap “Par for the Course”

‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’: Marshall’s funeral

Source: Zap2it.com Recaps

Gregfinley_secretlifeoftheamericanteenager_s3_290 It was time for Marshall Bowman’s funeral on this week’s “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.” Grace would not be attending, at least, that’s what she told Jack at the start of the episode. You and I knew better, didn’t we? Why did Grace not want to attend? As she herself stated, Grace has begun to hate herself for what happened to her father. She blames herself, so that statement wasn’t surprising, but it would also (obviously) be a wrong decision long-term for her not to be at her own father’s funeral. Thankfully, Ricky talked her out of the car and into attending. For the past few weeks I’ve found myself agreeing with Adrian all too much, that changed tonight. She was wrong, completely wrong about Grace not having to go to the funeral if she didn’t want to. Haven’t we all heard of closure? No, the funeral wasn’t going to provide closure for Grace, but if she didn’t go to the funeral she’d never find closure. Okay, so Adrian was having a hard time getting blamed for Marshall’s death, but her way of “helping” Grace wasn’t so much helping as hurting and she ought to have stayed quiet. Speaking of staying quiet, what was up with Jack’s dad talking to Grace tonight? That guy is the funniest character on the show, and while his talking to Grace was almost certainly helpful, he definitely has a problem giving a little too much information. I do think though that he got through to her, but I don’t think he needed to discuss such in such detail the pros and cons of having sex. I was really happy to see that Amy had the same reaction to Ricky taking John to the nursery that she had last week to Ben’s watching John. Clearly Amy’s issues are about leaving John in general, not leaving John with Ben. As anyone with a baby will tell you, the way Amy feels about that is completely and totally understandable, irrational, but completely normal. As for Anne and George, I feel like a little kid who can’t accept that his parents are getting divorced. It definitely looked tonight like George and Anne are headed that way, but I’m still hoping against hope that they’re not going to. I know, I know, there are some things I need to learn to accept in life, but this isn’t like the Tooth Fairy or Santa Claus, this is TV, they’re not necessarily getting divorced. Tell me they’re not… please. Come on now, Anne had that fight with David this week, so that relationship isn’t going particularly well. David seemed all over-protective in cancelling the meeting and asking about the doctor’s appointment. That’s just the sort of opening George could exploit if he wanted to. Please George, don’t let this family fall apart! Odds and ends:

  • Jack blaming Adrian for Grace being angry at him and maybe for killing Marshall? That came out of left field (Jack is angry, but I didn’t think he bought into Grace causing her dad’s death).
  • Ben’s figuring that maybe he could sleep with Adrian because he comforted her (and he totally though that) – awesome.
  • Also awesome (in a macabre, you’re going to think I’m wrong way) – Joe taking bets about whether or not Grace was going to attend the funeral.
  • We’re not talking about Amy trying to get out of work today in order to go to a funeral. Of course she wants to go out and have fun sometimes, but she has people who want to babysit and so she could go out sometimes. Trying to get out of work to go to a funeral to socialize obviously wasn’t appropriate.
  • See, I knew Jack was drinking.
  • As a complete aside – where do these people live that they have a lovely little local butcher shop? What’s next door, the drug store with the old-time soda fountain?

The Secret Life of the American Teenager Episode Recap 2.2 “What’s Done is Done”

‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’: Looking to blame someone

Source: Zap2it.com Recaps

Grace This week’s “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” focused on, as I think we all expected, the aftermath of Marshall Bowman’s death. Grace and Tom were very strong in their opinions about who was responsible, and neither of them thought Grace was innocent. Tom blamed Adrian for making sex looking like fun, and Grace blamed herself for having sex, but both essentially placed the blame on Grace’s actions on the evening in question. I understand where they were coming from, but I for one don’t believe that sort of thing to be possible.

As for the specifics of Grace’s logic, she figured that her dad was there to tell her what to do and what not to do, and because she refused to listen to her dad about having sex, God opted to take her dad away. Thank goodness Kathleen did her best to nip that idea in the bud. I do have to wonder whether Kathleen believed what she was saying however. There was a moment there at the end of the scene where Kathleen looked as though she too might blame Grace. I’m hoping that I misread her look – there was certainly nothing definitive about it – but I’m not sure I did.

Adrian certainly took the news that Tom blamed her pretty hard. She didn’t agree, but just because she didn’t agree doesn’t mean that it didn’t hurt. I have to applaud Adrian’s trying to protect Grace though, Grace said she didn’t want to see anyone – including Adrian – and Adrian did her best to dissuade people from going to Grace’s house. Adrian failed, Amy was going to go no matter what, but she tried and even called Grace her best friend.

Elsewheres tonight, wow was Amy annoyed at the idea of Ben babysitting. Now, if Ben has been over there every night since John was born, has he really not spent enough time with John for Amy to be comfortable with Ben watching John? Have they not tried some sort of “dry run” babysitting with Ben upstairs with John and Amy downstairs panicking that Ben was hurting the little one? Of course, maybe Amy wasn’t wrong because Ben did leave John with Leo and Betty.

Ah, Leo and Betty. Is Leo really engaged to her now? Talk about a whirlwind romance. After hearing Betty’s story about the “dog” that was a man who may still be her husband, I have to wonder if she’s just with Leo because Leo has enough cash to make her dog of a possible husband disappear forever. And, wasn’t it just last season that Leo still felt as though he never wanted to move forward from Ben’s mom?

Anne definitely indicated tonight that George wasn’t the father of her new pup, that it was David, but I wonder if that was solely because George denied that he could possibly be the father due to the vasectomy. I’d like to know if Anne has empirical evidence on the issue (did George admit to not having gotten the vasectomy in front of Ashley, that last “no” seemed inconclusive). David took the whole dad thing very well, but come on now, do you really think it ends there? With either David or George?

Odds and ends:

  • Kathleen’s hysterical laughter after Anne saying that she wasn’t telling people yet about the pregnancy – awesome, pure awesome.
  • Is George going to try to make a play on Kathleen? As fun as that might be to watch, I’m sticking with my stated desire from last week to see George and Anne get back together.
  • I really liked how happy Adrian was at the idea of being a part of a family and living in a house with said family. Definitely a good moment for the show.
  • Was that beer Jack was drinking after his fight with Grace? Is that going to be his big story for the season?

The Secret Life of the American Teenager Season 2 Premiere Recap “The Big One”

‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’: Someone else is pregnant

Shailenewoodley_secretlifeoftheamericanteenager_s3_290 Source: Zap2it.com Recaps

When we last left “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” our pregnant teenage hero was no longer pregnant, having given birth to a beautiful bundle of joy. She’d also secured the cushiest part-time job ever at a church-run daycare. The daycare would not only pay her, but watch the little one for free and was also going to give her health insurance. I had no idea that being a teenage mom was quite so easy, but what I did know was that with the start of a new season, life was about to throw Amy Juergens a few more curveballs.

We saw immediately that Amy hasn’t been having it all that easy with John – even with help, taking care of an infant isn’t simple. It was nice to see that while the show went fantasy on the part-time job with full benefits thing, they’re not completely glossing over the hardships of parenthood.

At the end of last season, we all sort of suspected that Anne might find herself with child this season, and before the opening credits, Amy had the same suspicion. Thank goodness they didn’t make us wait to find out the truth there (and I’m going to tell you right now, which isn’t a spoiler because this is a recap of the show, heck, I might even tell you more important things later), Anne is in fact pregnant. Of course, that left us with the ultimate question – George or David?

I’m hoping for George. I know that his relationship with Anne is on the skids what with the divorce and all, but I’m still hoping that they work it out. Yes, George claimed that he’s been “neutered,” but I’m not convinced that’s true and even if it was, those things don’t always work.

Think about how good it would be for Amy if the new kid was George’s. If George and Anne get back together they could move in together which would allow Amy to live in the other house right next door. I don’t think George and Anne should just let her have the house, some sort of payment schedule ought to exist, but it would be another step towards adulthood for Amy, and that’s never a bad thing.

As for Grace and Jack, they jumped into the whole sex thing, awfully quickly, didn’t they? The relationship was obviously headed in that direction, but I thought the deed would occur much later in the season. Clearly though, with Grace’s dad dying in a plane crash as she was having sex, Grace is not going to be doing it again anytime soon.

The other surprise with Grace wanting to have sex with Jack was Adrian stopping them during their initial attempt. I definitely didn’t see that coming. I know that Adrian from time to time comes up with good ideas, but after last season’s Max thing I didn’t think her good ideas were ever in the sex department.

Even if you think I’m wrong with Max, what about her wanting to have sex with Ricky tonight despite her dad being right in the living room? The girl has a weird relationship with sex and to hear good advice in that area come out of her mouth was surprising.

Bits and pieces:

  • What do you make of The Sausage King’s new woman, Betty? Is she just after him because he’s the king or is there more to it? There’s no way Leo’s paying for those dates, right (wouldn’t Betty have provided her own condom if Leo was paying)?
  • Next question — Ben, Ricky, and Amy… do you think Ricky still has any designs on Amy or was he offering to stay the night simply out of the goodness of his heart? Tell me goodness of his heart, please tell me goodness of his heart. I don’t believe it, but I’m hoping.

The Secret life of the american teenager, Shailene Woodley, Daren Kagasoff, Francia Raisa ABC FAMILY/BOB D’AMICO, ABC FAMILY/RANDY HOLMES

In the season-two premiere of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, somebody major dies, somebody gets pregnant and somebody loses their virginity. But what we’re more excited about is that at some point this season, which kicks off June 22 on ABC Family, Rumer Willis will be guest starring.

Yes, the offspring of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis is making an appearance this season. Rumer, who did a bang-up job on Medium as a prostitute recently, will play a pregnant teen. “It’s very dramatic how she comes onto the show,” says Francia Raisa (Adrian Lee). “There’s always a chance she can come back and do another episode. But I can’t say more.”

But she and her costars, Shailene Woodley (teen Amy Juergens, who just gave birth to baby John) and Daren Kagasoff (Ricky, Amy’s baby daddy), did say more about what’s in store for the kids this season…

Adrian’s Sexual Past: “You learn more of Adrian’s backstory about why she’s so into the sex and why it’s not so dramatic for her like most people,” says Francia. “And I know there is more sex involved and a lot more regrets when it comes to sex. Some people lose their virginity in the new season.”

Amy, Ricky & Ben Make Three: “It’s kind of a love triangle,” says Shailene. “I mean, I’m in love with my boyfriend [Ben] who is not the father of my baby. And then, the father of my baby [Ricky], you know, I don’t really like him. But there’s always that question in the back of my mind, like, he is the father, so could he be my boyfriend one day? There’s a lot drama just in the sense that my boyfriend, Ben, gets very jealous of Ricky because he’s at my house every night taking care of the baby. And Ben thinks something else is going on. It’s this difficult triangle.”

Death Comes a Knocking: “I think everybody is affected by it,” says Daren. “Because it kind of brings a realization to every family in the show that this could happen to your family as well. So that is a big element that I think it’ll be great for viewers to see. And we were all at the funeral when it was shot. So we all kind of had a place. It brings everyone together.”

The Secret Life of the American Teenager returns to ABC Family June 22 at 8 p.m.

Are you in on Secret Life? What do you make of all the baby drama, and who do you think dies in the first new episode?

ShailenewoodleySecret Life of the American Teenager” returns this week and I’ve got exclusive scoop on what’s to come. To get you set for this second season premiere, I thought I’d answer some of your questions today…

I heard someone is dying on the “Secret Life” show. Is it one of the series regulars or some random character that we barely even know?
Oh no, we know this person pretty well. He — yes, it’s a “he”! — has been on the show since the beginning and will be killed off in a tragic, dramatic accident.

So Molly Ringwald’s character on “Secret Life of The American Teenager” is pregnant?
Yep. Knocked up by that guy she started seeing last season and I’m hearing they’ll soon be engaged.

Grace is the person losing their virginity on “Secret Life,” isn’t she? I mean, she’s pretty much the only one left who hasn’t done it. Unless it’s Ashley.

The Saint of Secret Life Spills Season 2 Secrets

Ken Baumann, Secret Life of the American Teenager

The secret of The Secret Life of the American Teenager is out: Monday’s Season 1 finale included the long-awaited birth of baby John and the beginning of Amy’s new life with her boyfriend, Ben. But Ken Baumann, the multitalented 19-year-old behind the role — he’s written two novels, and several stories you can read here — promises plenty of other secrets await. He talked to us about a major death when Season 2 starts in June, Ben’s dynamic with Ricky, the father of Amy’s baby, and whether Ben will finally get to stop solving everyone else’s problems.

TVGuide.com: Ben is kind of a saint. He’s always counseling the people around him, including the father of his girlfriend’s baby and his own father. Will we ever see him freak out or reveal a not-so-good side? Baumannn: Yes. There is certainly a little more temptation for Ben to go down the wicked path. And first of all, I’d like to thank you very much for being the first person to say Ben is a saint. I’ve never heard that before, but I’ve always kind of felt that reading the scripts, like, “Wow! This guy, he can just take it! He can take the pain!” But yeah, there’s certainly a more challenging arc for Ben ahead. He’s got a lot of problems that he’s going to have to deal with. I can say that he does not get pregnant, so you can rule that out as a possibility.

TVGuide.com: Ben and Ricky work out a deal to be kind of co-dads in the season finale. But that can’t last, can it? Baumann: I think the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I think they’re going to try. You know, who knows? I’m sure that that sort of situation has worked out, but I think it’ll take a lot of patience and a lot of maturity from two hot-headed 15-year-old kids. But I think it’s inevitable for it to crumble a little bit. It’s not going to be perfect but it provides for some interesting television.

TVGuide.com: For Season 2, now that the baby’s born and her secret life is kind of over, how does the focus of the show change? Baumann: I think that the focus remarkably is still pretty centered on the family dynamic of the Juergens. Once you’ve had the baby, sure, the baby secret is revealed, but at the same time you’re having a 15-year-old freshman in high school raise a child with two warring fathers and parents in the midst of a divorce and sister precariously balanced on the edge of good and bad. I think there’s certainly enough to keep the show propelled. There is no end to the drama. It seems to only have gotten a lot more complicated. I think, yeah, the secret’s out but at the same time, these are all teenagers and they’re going to create a never-ending recursive loop of secret-creation.

TVGuide.com: And someone dies next season? Baumann: Yes, someone does die! I don’t think I can disclose who…

TVGuide.com: Can you say how tragic it is? If we assume an old person’s death is less tragic than a very young person’s death… Baumann: I’ll tell you this: It’s incredibly tragic and it has a very, very wide effect. Young and old alike, everyone is mourning. It certainly presents a lot of problems. … I don’t know if I can essentially say, “Oh, it’s a kid,” or “Oh, it’s a parent,” but everyone is affected, really harshly too. There are a few key younger people that are very affected.

TVGuide.com: But we can assume it’s not the baby? Baumann: Oh, God no. I will go so far as to say no. That would be awful, awful, awful.

TVGuide.com: Secret Life is one show that doesn’t seem afraid to talk about religion. Does that apply to the cast too? Baumann: I think that everyone realizes that the show from the get-go has been very morally centered. It definitely has a moral imperative. … I grew up in Texas, so I grew up in the South, I kind of grew up in the bucket of the Bible belt, so the religious stuff with Grace and Jack, it certainly rings true. I knew kids like that. So I think everyone is on board because they realize it’s well-written. We all believe it. If it was dealt with in a way that was just really over-the-top and two-dimensional, then I think you would have some division in the cast. But I think everyone’s happy that that’s being brought up because, my God, that’s 40 percent or 35 percent of people in this country. So I think that by leaving that out you’re kind of doing a disservice to your audience. What did you think of the Secret Life finale? Are you excited for Season 2 in June?

ABC Family has made a heft commitment to “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” ordering an extra-long second season for the hit drama.

On Monday (Feb. 9), ABC Family announced the pick-up of a 24-episode second run of “American Teenager” tentatively set to return in the summer of 2009.

That will leave fans of the show with only a brief window with “The Secret Life of the American Teenager,” which will complete its first season on March 23.

“‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’ has really struck a chord not just with our Millennial audience, but with viewers across the board,” says Kate Juergens, ABC Family’s executive vice president for original series programming and development. “We’re delighted to announce the series will return. The success of this show goes directly to creator Brenda Hampton’s telling of this heartfelt story and is backed by the standout performances of our talented cast.”

After a successful summer premiere, ABC Family moved “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” into a Monday night 8 p.m. slot opposite “Gossip Girl.” The drama has thrived in that slot, ranking as TV’s most watched program in the hour among females 12-34 (2.1 million) and as cable’s most watched show in total viewers (3.7 million) and adults 18-49 (1.7 million).

The show’s first season, focusing on the various relationships impacted by an unplanned teen pregnancy, was 23 episodes. The series stars Shailene Woodley, Molly Ringwald, Mark Derwin, India Eisley, Ken Baumann, Daren Kagasoff, Francia Raisa, Megan Park and Greg Finley.

The renewal of “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” had been expected for some time. ABC Family also just ordered up new seasons of “Greek” and “Liberty Heights,” plus 10 episode seasons of the comedies “Ruby and the Rockits” and “10 Things I Hate About You,” as well as the drama “Perfect 10.”

The Secret Life of the American Teenager: Episode Recap

‘The Secret Life of the American Teenager’: Consequences, schmonsequences

Zap2it.com

Kennybaumann_shailenewoodley_secret Last week on The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Amy and Ben got married, everyone had fake IDs, and Grace and Ricky were in love. This week the universe returns to its regular order, and none of the aforementioned is true anymore except for the last bit, though I’m not sure it counts if Ricky is still hooking up with Adrian.

We rejoin Tom, Tammy, Grace, and Ricky at the altar, where Tom is trying to get married to Tammy. Grace calls her mom to put a stop to it, spilling the beans about Amy’s wedding in the process. Cut to Amy’s and Ben’s dads unhappily interrupting the hotel room wedding reception. Ben’s dad angrily breaks the news to Ben that being married with an illegal document essentially means he never got married at all. A similar conversation occurs between Amy’s dad and Amy, though Amy catches a break when George says he won’t tell Anne. He and Anne DO have some great sex in the garage, though. Hmm.

Anne has some crazy verbal diarrhea at the divorce lawyers’ office, telling the receptionist all about how incredibly close she and Ashley and Amy are, and how they tell each other about everything. She runs into Mr. Bowman there, who off-handedly mentions Amy and Ben’s wedding. Oof. Of course, Anne confronts Ben and Amy, trying to force Amy to take responsibility for her baby – a hopeless task if I ever saw one. And in the middle of the lecture, Amy feels the baby really moving for the first time. It was probably just trying to claw its way out of your whiny, irresponsible uterus, sweetheart.

Meganpark_secretlifeoftheamericante Grace, in the meantime, is getting stupider with every episode. She’s happily in love with Ricky, despite the 8,000,000 signs that he’s cheating on her with Adrian. (Sign number one being the fact that Adrian barely stopped short of spelling it out for her the day after she and Ricky’s post-wedding hookup.) Ricky, for his part, does seem to at least believe he loves Grace. Man, sex addicts just get younger and younger these days. (Note to ABC Family: I will be sending you a pitch for my show about kindergarten sex addicts shortly. Adorable AND edgy!)

When Adrian’s dad gets wind of the fake IDs that facilitated the wedding, he confiscates Adrian’s and starts an investigation into the source at school, where Mr. Molina (he’s back after marrying his crazy girlfriend!) and the police bust Joe pretty quickly. Jack, though, collects everyone’s fake IDs and turns HIMSELF in as the ID-making mastermind.  He gets let off with community service, and with the satisfaction of helping out a soul in need.
