Though we’ve known for months that Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton would not return to “One Tree Hill” this fall for the series’ seventh season, The CW has just now officially confirmed the actors’ exits. A network rep tells me they will be welcoming two new cast members, in addition to Austin Nichols, as series regulars.

Exclusive: Murray, Burton exit ‘One Tree Hill’

Onetreehillwedding_l It looks like One Tree Hill newlyweds Peyton and Lucas are about to embark on a permanent honeymoon. Sources confirm that Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton, whose characters tied the knot in last night’s penultimate episode, will not be returning for the show’s seventh season next fall. The CW is expected to formally announce their departures next Thursday at its upfront presentation.  Murray and Burton have been engaged in rather high-profile contract negotiations for the past several months. Ultimately, a deal couldn’t be worked out and both actors will make their final appearances in next Monday’s season finale. To fill the void next season, a Hill insider tells me that two new characters will be introduced. Additionally, Austin Nichols (Julian) is being promoted to a series regular. What say you, Tree Hill fans? Pumped for OTH 2.0? Too upset to even think about it? Let loose in the comments section.

The CW has given a nod to the departures of two actors playing Lucas and Peyton on ‘One Tree Hill’, and said that 2 new cast will be introduced in the seventh season.

Confirmed: Chad Michael Murray and Hilarie Burton Exit 'One Tree Hill'See larger image The media have been reporting that is a goner from “” but apparently one more is leaving the show. His on-screen wife, Peyton, is not included in the next season’s story and thus is also out from the picture. The CW has confirmed the departures of the two actors to several media outlets, but no formal reason has been given. The characters got married on the Monday, May 11 episode but pregnant Peyton is wheeled to the ER on the next week’s episode. Fans of the show will be able to watch Chad and Hilarie, who have been in the show for 6 years, for the last time on the season finale that airs May 18. Additionally, The CW said that they will compensate the loss with two new characters, which details have not been elaborated further. Austin Nichols, who plays Julian, is also promoted as a regular. The rumors of Chad and Hilarie leaving the show erupted for the first time in late February when Hilarie posted an emotional video message to fans, saying “…I wish I had creative control over the show, and I don’t. But if I did, it would go on for a million years, and Peyton Sawyer would cry for you all the time – because she does that.” Few weeks later Chad, captured by a fan’s video during autograph signing, said “They don’t want me. I’m not joking” before then encouraging that fans “should do online, is start blogging and being pissed off that they don’t want that.” Although involved in a negotiation later on, Chad mentioned that the show wanted to save money.

Very saddening to hear this. I honestly think everyone involved is going to regret this decision. 1) The show WILL lose viewers because of this twist in cast desicions, 2) How many actors who have left a great part of their career (like OTH is for Murray and Burton), thinking they will go onto bigger and better things, actually have (some people don’t realise the great thing they have infront of them) and 3) It is a great shame that Murray (and/or Burton) can’t stay for what will probably be the final season of the show that has made them what they are today! Fans are going to be disappointed, very disappointed!

    WTF
this shows main character is Lucas
how can u do it without him
I mean if u thought kicking marissa off the OC was bad, she wasn’t even the central character. IF chad and Hallie don’t come back, then the show must end! any other plan is idiotic and stupid. Its like grey’s anatomy with no meridith or house with no house

well, that’s the end of Leyton, i knew that someday OTH will end… but not like this.. mark said that they built a world where peyton and lucas is meant to be.. for me… NO LEYTON = NO OTH

    it’s very sad

well, i think its safe to say that last night’s “season” finale is really a “series” finale to all long-time fans of OTH. I can speak for myself in saying that I will no longer be watching the show. This was it for me, this closed all doors that needed to be closed, it left no open-ended questions (except where in the heck are Lucas and Peyton going??), and so I no longer need to watch OTH. If the story line were to continue with ALL original cast members… then I would have continued to watch. But since the show’s MAIN character, the character the entire show was BASED on is no longer going to be on the show… what is the point in watching? They might as well slap a new title on it. Calling it “One Tree Hill” is an insult to all viewers and fans, because its NOT.

It’s a shame that they let Chad and Hilary walk away. I don’t think it was for monetary reasons, I think the majority of the cast was done, and has been done with the show, for awhile. They just got the rest of them to sign on without securing Chad and Hilary too. Sad for the rest of them, because I know everyone else was saying “it’s all of us or none of us”, and now the “all” isn’t there, and the show most certainly will not do as well next season. For me, OTH has been lacking for the past season anyways, and I think this should have been the wrap-up.

Who knows? Maybe Chad and Hilary will be moved to come back? Doubtful… but as they said in the SERIES finale… “dreams come true everyday”

Someone needs to start a protest. Peyton is my IDOL! And lucas is extremely gorgous!!!! Please dont make them leave!!!

Ihave to agree with Boo. The show is not worth watching now without Lucas and Peyton. I think the last episode was a perfect wrap. It didn’t leave an doors open or questions unanswered. I love OTH but I have to say, I won’t be watchin the next season, unless Chad and Hilary return.

i agree with everyone on this. the story has always been about lucas and peyton so what’s the point of continuing without the two main characters? imagine any tv series or movie sequel without the two main characters and you have the answer. in spite of this i will probably still watch season 7, if for nothing else to find out if it actually works!

also… i think they will have to resolve dan’s storyline in season 7. if he’s going to live, then give him a heart otherwise his living is unnatural!

as much as i am saddened by the departure of lucas and peyton, i will watch oth season 7!! in season 1 was lucas scott the main character who the show was based on…yes!! by season 6 was lucas scott the only main character…NO! there were 4 other main characters on the show!! you can not tell me that you watched the show just to see what happend to lucas, you also had to be intrested in hayley and musci, nathan and basketball, brooke and jullian, and jimmer jam!! a true oth fan will support the show no mater what! the show is still gonna have some of the best music in the history of a tv series! there will be plenty of story line with brooke and julians relationship just blossoming and nathans basketball career just beginning! so dont give up on mark and one tree hill yet! do i want lucas and peytn to surprise everyone and comeback…Heck yes i do, but if they dont then maybe they will be off ” touring” the world by yacht with andy, karen, and lily!! and thats all i have to say about that!!!

i lied thats not all i have to say about that! LOL!!

a majority of the show has been about the fight for lucas and peyton… well the fight is over they are married and with child what more story can you make out of them?? if they were going to be on the show they would pretty much fade into the background anyway!! LOL!!

one tree hill will not be the same without peyton and lucas. its a shame that something couldn’t have been worked out for the two. I for one dont think i will carry on watching it, just wouldn’t keep me interested anymore. yeah there are other main characters but how much longer will they be able to keep it goin, if the show keeps going?

     /  July 4, 2009

new characters will never fill the void of lucas and peyton. Lucas and nathan are the show with only one of them theres a piece mising and as they started the story of one tree hill together i think they should finish it together. I’m really annoyed they think new characters will make up for the mising old ones because they are so wrong.

Miraculously, and because OTH became my guilty pleasure/nostagic keepsake of home when I was overseas, I am a true die hard OTH fan. OTH won’t be the same without Lucas’s voice, his narration, his squinty eyes; without Peyton’s musical savy, her skinny legs and “you don’t know me” attitude, BUT…it could possibly be something entirely different. Personally, I am a NALEY fan. If those two (and Jamie) leave the show, then it’s done for me. Like Peyton said, “People always leave.” Let’s see how Nathan deals without his big bro. As for the girls, Brooke and Haley have always had a more special relationship, a mature one without the sharing of guys LOL, since they lived together. I want Brooke’s story and Sam’s, Julian’s, and I am even interested in Haley’s sister. My only Qs are What’s going to happen to Red Bedroom records, and the music in general, since that was usually P. Sawyer’s thing. Is Mia coming back? How will they explain the loss of Uncle Luc to poor little Jamie? Oh, Well, in the words of P. Sawyer to Nathan when Haley left, “Sometimes they come back.” I will sneak a peek and see if it is worth it in the first couple of episodes.

you sad sad people who the hell cares its just a dam tv show all of you GET A LIFE!

  17. This is the last season for One Tree Hill. They’re not going to be able to recover from losing Chad Michael Murray, the part which the pilot episode revolved entirely around.
Lucas Scott is the reason we first stepped into Tree Hill, and as much as I love the show, it’s going to suffer tremendously.
    It had a good run.

One Tree Hill isn’t even going to be worth watching now…you can’t just take two main characters out of a show and expect it too work still! It won’t..

One Tree Hill without CMM and HB is going to be ridiculous. I mean yeah theres nathan, jamie, and haley as a main character but they’ve been in the background for a while now and its going to be hard for them to resurface. As for Brooke and Julian their storyline was boring. It’s something that wasnt surprising or anything the show is going to try and make them the new Leyton and that is deff not going to happen. Look what happened when they took out Keith anyone that wasn’t crazy (Deb) disappeared into the background (Karen). Pretty much anyone who was involved with either Lucas and Peyton have no chance staying on the show. Think about it and that is everyone. They pretty much tied the show together and also brought the cast together on the show. At this point I would rather the show make Kate Voegele and Stephen Coletti regulars to fill the void. They are a much better addition and they are fun to watch. It’s going to be hard to watch OTH with out them two considering they are the only reason I started and continued to watch the show. Maybe the show should stop going into the future because it’s turning the show into something its not. Hopefully the other storylines are better than they have been lately or else the show wont continue.

I only watched like 20 minutes of the first episode of season 7 and it sucked. I didn’t know that CMM and HB were no longer part of the cast until now and I’m really surprised because its a very stupid decision to go on without them. I wont even bother to watch season seven then. They’ve ruined a great show!

Im not gonna lie, the whole reason why i watch the show is because of Lucas and Peyton. When I found out they were not gonna be on the show, I was extremely disappointed. I’m not going to bother watching the seventh season with them gone. I think that was a very bad decision to discontinue their characters. They made the show, you cant have One Tree Hill without the main bloody characters!!

  27. Michelle

     /  November 11, 2009

I strongly believe this will be their last season. I cant think of one television series that has survived after kicking off the main characters. no offense to the rest of them, I love them all, but it just wont be the same. It’ll always seem like a huge part is missing and viewers will be unintersted. If you want to save your show and keep the smiles on the viewers, and their eyes on the screen, you’ll have to bring them back.

okay, i swore against watching the 7th season as well, cause to be honest, chad was the best part of the show not only because of his character but his looks too.
however, i caved and watched the 7th season only to be completely pissed off.
yea, robert/clay is smokin, and quinns alright too.. but the history isnt there.
and when all the crazy shit goes down, especially between haley and nathan’s cheating fiasco…. and the death of haleys mother… i couldnt help but freak right out cause lucas wasnt there for them.
    it just makes no sense.
the ending of season 6 was stupid. and if them leaving was so final, they should have made their exits more final too.
if theyre alive and “travelling with karen”… why couldnt they come back for something as important as lydias funneral.
    poor decisions made here……..
wish i didnt taint my memories of oth with season 7.. wont be making that mistake again next season.
