‘Vampire Diaries’ exclusive: Damon heads to Cougar Town!

Melinda Clarke’s upcoming Vampire Diaries arc just got a whole lot juicier. Executive producer Kevin Williamson tells me that Matt’s trashtastic mother, Kelly, will blow into Mystic Falls and waste no time digging her cougar claws into Ian Somerhalder’s Damon. “If I didn’t have Kelly and Damon hook up there would be no God,” declares Williamson with a laugh. “What’s the point of doing TV if you’re not going to put those two characters together? That’s going to be a fun relationship to explore.” Of course, Williamson points out that Kelly Donovan has more to offer than a reputation as a bad mom and a healthy appetite for vampire sex. Clarke’s character also shares a rich history with the town’s adult population. “We’ll reveal that she was friends with Sheriff [Elizabeth] and Elena’s mother,” he says. “The three of them were really tight friends back in the day. Sheriff and Kelly, in particular, have ongoing issues to deal with.” DVR alert: Clarke’s Vampire Diaries debut is slated for March 25. (Michael Ausiello)

Elena’s conversion, says executive producer Julie Plec, “is a fundamental part of the books — it’s, in fact, most of the books. So it’s not something we are going to ignore. But right now it’s a little too Twilight similar for us to feel comfortable dabbling in it.” Beyond concerns about Elena being written off as a small-screen Bella, “the best thing about her is, she’s a non-genre, non-supernatural, true-blue ingénue,” says Plec, “and we don’t really want to mess with that. She’s the relatable character. To pervert that too soon would be a mistake.” (Michael Ausiello)

“This show is cemented in a love triangle over the whole run of the series,” notes exec producer Julie Plec, “and right now we’re very much embedded in the pure love [of] Stefan and Elena.” So not even a kiss? Yes, Plec teases, but “probably beyond season 1.” Adds boss man Kevin Williamson: “This show is always going to be about Stefan and Elena. It has to be. They’re soul mates.” (Michael Ausiello)

According to showrunner Kevin Williamson, Brandon Quinn is playing “a vengeful guy with a score to settle with Damon.” He appears in the January 21st episode. (Michael Ausiello)

The writers actually aren’t going to wait until the end of the season to open the tomb with all the vampires and Katherine in it. (Watch With Kristin)

We’ll be meeting Bonnie’s cousin Lucy when Vampire Diaries returns in a few weeks. Lucy is a beautiful flirt who’s also smarter than your average college coed and isn’t afraid to show it. Expect lots of in-your-face brazenness from this one, which is sure to catch the attention of certain local vampires. (Watch With Kristin)

Elena and Damon are going on a road trip pretty soon. (Watch With Kristin)

Brace yourselves for another flashback, because in episode 12, we’re going to meet Damon and Stefan’s father, Giuseppe! He is described as a handsome, no-nonsense businessman of Italian heritage who in his mid-40s, “with a stern demeanor that hides a fierce devotion to his family and growing fears for their future.” (Watch With Kristin)

Kevin Williamson says that the new history teacher, Matt Davis, is in town because he has “a bit of a secret agenda.” (Watch With Kristin)

Matt and Caroline’s relationship continues to grow. (Watch With Kristin)

“We’ll also get to learn more about the town. We will stay focused on our leads and our central epic love story,” says Williamson. “But the show does expand.” (Watch With Kristin)

Ouch, killing Elena’s brother would be rather harsh – though not unheard of for this moody little series. For the time being, an insider tells me, “Jeremy is safer than most, but not danger-free.” (Michael Ausiello)

Mia Kirshner has joined the cast in a recurring role. She will play Isobel, the sweet-yet-dangerous wife of Matt Davis’ history teacher, Alaric. Kirshner will debut in January 21 episode, the first one back after the break.

“We have another flashback episode scheduled,” says executive producer Kevin Williamson. “We’re going to learn more about the night [Stefan and Damon] died.” This flashback will give us more information about Katherine, which will eventually lead to a surprising reveal about the Elena doppelgänger.
