CBS’s New Fall 2010 Schedule: Cancels Ghost Whisperer

CBS Shifts Schedule, Unveils Male-Dominated New Shows

Jim Parsons and William Shatner

CBS will add only five new series to its fall lineup, taking an if-it-ain’t broke approach that will bring back 18 series, though some of them will be in unproven new time slots. The male-dominated new shows include the previously anticipated Hawaii Five-0 reboot, a new legal drama, The Defenders, starring Jim Belushi and Jerry O’Connell, a family cop drama starring Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg, and $#*! My Dad Says, a William Shatner vehicle inspired by a Twitter feed.

Fall TV Scorecard: Which shows are returning? Which aren’t?

Also joining the lineup is and Chuck Lorre’s romantic comedy Mike & Molly, with Billy Gardell and Melissa McCarthy. Hawaii Five-O already has high expectations not only because of fondness for the original series, but also because the cast include Daniel Dae Kim in his first post-Lost role and Alex O’Loughlin hoping the third time will be the charm after two previous CBS series — Moonlight and Three Rivers — were each canceled after less than one season.

Check out our day-by-day guide to all the networks’ fall schedules

The Big Bang Theory, a major success as part of CBS’ Monday night comedy block, will move to Thursdays at 8 to launch a new hour of comedy. Survivor will leave Thursdays for Wednesday nights at 8. And, in perhaps the network’s riskiest move, CSI: NY will move to Fridays at 9, a timeslot where shows often struggle to thrive. CSI: Miami will move to Sundays at 10.

CBS cancels seven series, including Ghost Whisperer, Numb3rs and Cold Case

The network ordered a Criminal Minds spinoff starring Forest Whitaker for midseason.

Details on the new shows:

Hawaii Five-O: Kim and O’Loughlin’s characters solve crimes in a drama CBS president describes as being “character driven with great humor.”

The Defenders: In another drama billed as funny and character-based, Belushi and O’Connell play a pair of colorful Las Vegas defense attorneys.

Blue Bloods: Selleck and Wahlberg anchor this NYPD drama about a family so into being cops that their blood runs blue. Not literally.

$#*! My Dad Says: This hard-to-type and harder to pronounce comedy was inspired by a Twitter feed about a dad who says the wrong thing, wears not enough clothes and generally embarrasses his son.

Mike and Molly: Gardell and McCarthy play a cop and teacher who find love at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting.

Latest upfront headlines (including ‘Ghost Whisperer’ scoop)

Image Credit: Vivian Zink/ABC* CBS’ daring new fall schedule (Big Bang to Thursday! Survivor to Wednesday! CSI: NY to Friday!) can be found here.

* All signs point to ABC rescuing Ghost Whisperer from CBS’ trash heap. An Alphabet reprieve for Old Christine, however, appears unlikely. And I think we can all agree that that sucks something major.

* The final updates have been made to my Bubble Show Scorecard. Did your favorites make the cut? Most of mine did — and, really, that’s all that matters.

* At Adult Swim’s upfront presentation this evening, the cable net is expected to unveil a trailer for the new season of Rob Corddry’s uproariously twisted onetime Web series Children’s Hospital (bowing July 11). An exclusive first look at said trailer is below.

Breaking: CBS cancels ‘Ghost Whisperer’ and ‘Old Christine’

ghost-whisperer-old-christineImage Credit: Sonja Flemming/CBS; Greg Gayne/CBSIn a stunning move, CBS has axed both Ghost Whisperer and The New Adventures of Old Christine.

Also gone: Gary Unmarried, Cold Case, Miami Medical, Accidentally on Purpose, and Numb3rs.

Medium and Rules of Engagement, meanwhile, have been renewed.

Fans may want to hold off on eulogizing Ghost and Christine for a day or two, however. There’s an outside chance that ABC (which co-owns GW and has long coveted Christine) may swoop in and rescue one or both.

“There’s a 50/50 shot that Christine will move to ABC,” says one source. A reprieve for Ghost appears less likely. Final decisions are expected later this week.

I and evryone In my Life is in agreement. If C.B.S. or any other channel continues to either, begins a new series and then cancels them such as, Terminator (THe sarah conner chronical’s) dark angel, jericho, which leaves us hangin. Or to cancel great show’s like Ghost Whisperer(and leave us hangin). We we’ll stop watching New shows unless they go atleast 3 season and they must have a proper ending. We’ll just wait untill they come out on dvd. So to all channells beware that if you want new series to succeed quit leaving us hangin….

I can not believe you are cancelling Ghost Whisperer, it is an awesome show, but like the other shows you have canceled, I guess one should come to expect it. Well, fine but you have lost one more viewer as I am tired of this.

I am very upset that Ghost Whisperer is cancelled!!!! I was going to watch the new shows and now that I know one of my favorite shows are cancelled I am changing my mind. This show is great to watch! This network has left the story unfinished and I feel that is very unfair. CBS has lost me as a veiwer.

I’m very disappointed in CBS for canceling Ghost Whisper. This was one of my favorite shows, still is. I will just find the network that picks this show up and watch it from now on. If it wasn’t for Ghost Whisper and a few, very few, other shows I would NOT be watching anything on CBS. Why in the world would you change something that has been working? Why change the schedule? You should have kept the old shows in the same time slot and worked in the new shows, which aren’t all that great I might add.

I can’t believe CBS would drop a great show like Ghost Whisperer and keep some of the other lame shows. I’m about ready to cancel TV and watch DVDs.

I enjoyed G W and was looking forward to the new Fall season. I can’t believe that CBS cancled this program. Sounds like the network is having a problem with women ,this is a terrible loss to this network and I hope that it gets picked up by ABC. At least this program had a story to it where as Christine is nothing but a program for air heads.

I too cannot believe CBS has canceled another good show. This was something my 10 year old son and I looked forward to every week last season! Please bring it back. It’s getting harder and harder for families to be able to sit and watch evening TV together without some type of drugs, violence and foul language.

I can’t believe that once again we have been left hangin’ on another good show. My family and I loved watching Ghost Whisperer. Those were some of the few times we all gathered together to see what would happen next!! Even when we couldn’t catch it on T.V. we would look it up online to tune in that way! I hope someone realizes what a great show it was and decides to bring it back!!!

CBS use to be my favorite station…guess all things must change…

Ghost Whisperer was one of your best shows! We so looked forward to Friday nite with Ghost Whisperer and Medium. This show was a different type of show, not the usual cop show, lawyer show, doctor/hospital show. Please bring it back! It’s obvious MANY people watched this show!

Bring back Ghost Whisperer! Friday nights are just not the same. I was really looking forward to a new season.

  21. I am very dissapointed to see Ghost Whisperer and Numb3rs both gone!!! I Love most of the CBS’S line up and feel they have made mistakes in taking these two shows off the air.

OMG, just found out that GW is no longer around. How could they?? There are so few shows worth watching, GW, Medium and Men in Trees. GW still had years of stories to offer. Why is it that crap shows like soaps, ‘so-called’ reality tv and other rubbish shows run forever and offer no moral compass, and yet shows that are family orientated with good story, plot and finale are given the ass after a mere 5 seasons not even completed!. We are bombarded with crap that rots the mind, then complain when society is going to hell in a hen’s basket. TV exec’s need to wake up and smell the coffee and treat their audiences with respect and understand that TV has an onus to provide balanced programs and genderes, opposed to reality crap about celebrity complaining of their ‘poor rich lives’. GW was & still is an earthy show, with JLH and cast performing magnificently each week. I just loved her outfits and her ‘store’ The Same As it Never Was’.
There are millions upon millions of viewers who will miss the show.
    Please consider its return!
