[Warning: This story includes major spoilers from the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy]

Oh, Meredith Grey, you have really screwed up this time.

In the season finale of Grey’s Anatomy, Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) decision to tamper with the Alzheimer’s clinical trial was put front and center, as her actions fractured her marriage with Derek (Patrick Dempsey). As Derek sought refuge at the unfinished McMansion, Meredith was left alone to care for newly adopted baby Zola. Fortunately, this may open the door for more dark and twisty Meredith!

What did you think of the season finale? Read our recap and sound off

“It will give her and Derek some interesting stuff to play [next season],” Sarah Drew tells TVGuide.com “They’ve been so happy for the last few seasons and there hasn’t been much drama between the two of them, and now this is a massive thing that’s come between them.”

Meredith will also have to deal with the fallout between her and Alex (Justin Chambers), who had revealed her misdeed to Owen (Kevin McKidd) in hopes it would pull her out of the running for Chief Resident. Unfortunately for Alex, he could not have foreseen that this would cause irrevocable damage to both their careers, as Owen elected April the Chief Resident in Alex’s place, and Meredith was suspended from the hospital.

“That’s going to be something the whole hospital will feel,” Drew continues. “There will be tension between the two of them, and the happy home of residents that Meredith created in her house is now kind of split and crumbling apart — and there’s going to be a baby crying in the background!”

Meredith and Derek weren’t the only couple to reach an impasse. After Cristina (Sandra Oh) discovered she was pregnant, she decided to cut Owen out of the decision making and scheduled an abortion, prompting Owen to kick her out of the house. “I think there’s going to be a lot of movement towards healing and reparation,” Drew says of next season, “People really hurting each other and trying to get past it.”

As for the new hierarchy with April in charge, it’s one thing to be Chief Resident on paper and another to put the title into action. “I think she’s going to be amazing at creating protocols that work incredibly efficiently,” Drew says. “However, part of being Chief Resident is demanding respect so that people actually do what you say and follow the protocols you set in motion. The biggest thing for her is to really gain the respect of her peers.”

What do you hope to see next season?

I can’t stand April! I do not understand why it has to be one that just came into a show a year ago! It should be a veteran actress/actor at least! Why not lexie! But then it goes to show, the veterans are more for surgery than to organize and look over things.

I’m also not liking how they did another on/off again with Meredith and Derek, the story is old. But I think Derek will come around eventually. I think he’s too black and white, and Meredith is in the gray shades.

At least they did something to stir up the bland drama of the show. But they need more creativity into the show, and bring back intense medical cases that fans also enjoyed along with the relationship aspect of it.

Notice how the writing got dry once they got another show on, Off the map, but now that the show has been cancelled, I hope they bring back the intensity of grey’s.

i think its good that meredith and derek are having another dispute they’ve been happy scince they were married in season 6! Although i dont know if they should get back together right away or if tey should drag it out………….
And as for cristina and owen, finally they have been happier for even longer! i think they should get a divorse over their differences and then little grey would get back with mc steamy and then cristina and jackson coi=uld get together! 😉 But seeing how this is the last season i doubt that will happen 😦 …. xxx

None of the veteran actors could have been chief resident. Meredith and Alex were ruled out over the trial dispute, christina was ruled out over her differences with Teddy, and Lexie is not qualified to be chief resident as she is a year behind all the other residents. So it left Avery and Kepner, and as Avery had just pulled out of his clinical trial, kepner was the only one who met the requirements.

Probably unrealistic but I hope Der/Mer are offered new contracts and stay for more seasons. Then this coming season can present healing in a better thought out way, something like Season 2.

Although i think Mer/Der were awsome about apdopting baby Zola i think they should have a baby of their own and that Cristina keeps her baby in order to kep her relationship with Owen

  6. I am a very big fan of greys anatomy and i live here in London and also I have all the dvds from season 1 to season 7 but as i have seen it i am disappointed at the on and off relatonship of derek and meredith their ups and downs I think its time for them to have a happy ending otherwise it becomes so boring and uninterested for me please let them have a lovely time and ending they are my favorite characters in the show not to mention Patrick Demsey is one of my favorite actors. Thanks ever so much for taking time for my personal opinions, good luck and if things gets worse of derek and meredith relationship i wont be buying season 8 anymore
