Breaking: CW renews ‘Smallville,’ ‘Gossip Girl,’ ‘One Tree Hill,’ ‘Supernatural,’ and ‘90210’

Michael Ausiello @ EW

Cwrenewals_l Good news, fans of all things CW. The network just announced that it has renewed Smallville, Supernatural, Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, and 90210 for next season. America’s Next Top Model has also been greenlit for two additional cycles.

“As we continue to build The CW Network as a destination for young women, these six shows have clearly contributed to strengthening our schedule and our brand identity,” CW boss Dawn Ostroff said in a statement. “By securing these signature hits for next season, we’re furthering our commitment to deliver high-quality, original programming to our viewers, advertisers and affiliates.”

While the Gossip Girl and America’s Next Top Model pickups were a foregone conclusion, the fates of Smallville, Supernatural, One Tree Hill, and 90210 were less certain. In the case of Smallville and One Tree Hill, a lot was riding on which of those show’s core cast-members would be returning. Smallville‘s renewal clearly signals that Tom Welling has successfully concluded his contract negotiations with producer Warner Bros, but the same can’t be said for OTH leading man Chad Michael Murray. The actor-writer’s participation next season is TBD, although insiders say he’s expected to return in some capacity.

Conspicuously missing from The CW’s slew of renewals: The freshman gem that is Privileged. However, that doesn’t mean the show has been canceled, a CW source insists. “No final decision has been made yet,” the insider says. Translation: Watch tonight’s season finale, dammit!

Reaction to all the renewals? Do you deem any of them unworthy? And does Privileged deserve a shot at another year? And what about fellow bubble shows Reaper, The Game, and Everybody Hates Chris? Sound off below!

Pilot News: The CW Bites into Vampire Diaries and Politics

Source: TV Guide

Not surprisingly, the box-office success of Twilight has led the CW to stake out some territory in the teens-and-vampires genre by picking up a pilot for Vampire Diaries, a Kevin Williamson-penned adaptation of a 15-year-old series of novels.

Similar to (and yet predating) Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight, Vampire Diaries revolves around a young heroine who is the object of obsession of two brothers — both vampires, one good and one … well, he’s more complicated. The bloodsucking siblings fight for her soul, as well as dibs on other residents within their small town.

Williamson (Dawson’s Creek, Scream) is penning the pilot with Julie Plec (Kyle XY), and will exec-produce.

The CW has also greenlit Body Politic, a Washington, D.C-set drama about young up-and-comers toiling for the nation’s capital.

Previously this winter, the CW gave a go-ahead to a “prequel” spin-off of Gossip Girl; Krysten Ritter (Veronica Mars) is the first announced cast member, playing a young Lily’s sister.

  • Jenny has been an intern for Blair’s mama, Eleanor, and she’s clearly moving on up because she’ll even make a surprise appearance at the infamous White Party. Source: Kristin on E!Online
  • Thanks to The CW, I had the chance to watch the premiere. Here are a few tidbits I can add to the spoilers below: Because of his new dating habits, Gossip Girl gives Dan a new nickname: Playboy. The latter is unable to finish a story, which doesn’t suit well with his boss. Chuck tries to get Blair back but things will not go his way, especially when he can’t say the words Blair needs to hear from him. Blair learns the truth about her new boyfriend James. Let’s say it’s a fairtale ending… for now. Jenny and Eric patch things up. The renewed friendship will help Jenny get revenge on her boss. Rufus is still on tour. Dan and Serena have a heart to heart. Source:
  • As the summer draws to a close in the Hamptons, Serena and Nate have everyone fooled into thinking they are a couple to cover up the fact that Nate has been hooking up with a married older woman (guest star [Madchen] Amick) and Serena has been secretly mourning her break-up with Dan. Blair returns from abroad with a hot guy on her arm (guest star Patrick Heusinger), making a very jealous Chuck question his decision to leave Blair stranded at the heliport. Dan has spent the summer assisting a famous author (guest star [Jay] McInerney), but decides to head to the Hamptons to see how things stand with Serena after a summer spent apart. While interning for Eleanor Waldorf’s company, Jenny sneaks an invite to a much-coveted Hamptons’ White Party at which Eric introduces her to socialite Tinsley Mortimer. Matthew Settle also stars. • Nate gets involved with Catherine Mason, a confident woman in her late 30s. She used to be a model and is now a Upper East Side wife. The episode also features 18-year-old Marcus Beaton, a British man with a royal upbringing, and Sebastian Harris, a 40-year-old renowned author. Source:
  • Blair and Chuck back together? Year, right. In [an] Hamptons-set party scene [… they talk] about the love that cannot be. The two will, however, resume their usual bickering: “There’s going to be a lot of insults and evil plans.” Source: TV Guide
  • In the season premiere, the kids go to the Hamptons, Serena and Dan reconsider their breakup and Blair uses a new guy to make Chuck jealous. […] Inside sources are spilling on the latest romantic entanglements on Gossip Girl’s Upper East Side, including news that the show’s original golden couple, Nate and Blair, aren’t reconciling any time soon-thanks to a certain new cougar who’s ready to pounce. This pretty (older) kitty is none other than Mädchen Amick, who, according to CW insiders, will appear in the season premiere on Sept. 1 and is expected to hang around for four or five episodes. Word is, Mädchen is heavily involved in Nate’s storylines and also has “a surprising connection to another new character on the show.” Source: Kristin on E!Online
