90210 Spoilers: Dustin Milligan Leaving ‘90210’ & Season 2 Spoilers

3/31 New ‘Life’s a Drag’

90210

In an attempt to get close to Liam (guest star Matt Lanter), Naomi offers to be his math tutor, but she gets more than she bargains for when he takes her out for a wild night. Silver takes a class assignment a little too far when she creates a video that documents her love for Dixon. When Silver screens the video for her fellow students, everyone, including Ryan, is shocked when they see Dixon and Silver in an intimate situation. Upon seeing the reaction of everyone around her, Silver blames Ryan for the situation. Ethan and Annie’s relationship remains rocky, but more problems arise when Adrianna reveals that Rhonda and Ethan shared a kiss at the dance. Harry and Debbie are surprised to learn that Annie quit the school play in order to spend more time with Ethan.

The next season of 90210 would have to go on without good guy Ethan, as Entertainment Weekly has just reported that Canadian actor Dustin Milligan won’t be returning to the show this fall.  He may be one-half of the series’ central super couple, but he has no power over major decisions such as this.

An insider from the series revealed that Milligan’s contract option will not be picked up for 90210‘s sophomore run.  However, he might be back to wrap up his character’s story in a multi-episode arc.

Apparently, the reasons for Milligan’s departure are rooted in the creative vision of the writers and had nothing to do with financial matters.  Rebecca Rand Kirshner Sinclair, the new boss of 90210, admitted to EW‘s Michael Ausiello about season 2 being “significantly” different than the first.

It looks as if it’s going to be quite a reboot, especially with Sinclair’s idea to “reconceive things visually.”  She also maintained that “There are opportunities to embrace California culture visually in terms of fashion and style; I want it to be more contemporary.”

“If Gossip Girl is about youth in New York,” she explains, “I want to [make 90210] about youth in L.A. and Beverly Hills.”

Another point she’s hoping to raise is that 90210 won’t be relying on the original’s alums to boost their ratings.  This could also mean a farewell to the likes of Jennie Garth, Shannen Doherty, and Tori Spelling.  It only seems fit since writer-producer Sinclair already took the helm from the original show-running duo of Jeff Judah and Gabe Sachs.

“The show tried to be a lot of things to a lot of people in its first season,” Sinclair said.  “I think the center lies with the generation of kids that are in high school now.  I’m not interested in casting people for stunt value.”

This goes the same for Dustin Milligan, who’ll surely be missed.  “Everyone loves Ethan,” said the 90210 insider.  “There was just a feeling that the character had run its course.”

  1. Anybody know where to find video clips from this episode? I just blogged about the song “Magic Show” by Electric Owls, and I wanted to ad a clip to it. Thanks!

I dont think I will be watching this show, how can they just cut a major player, that is nuts!!! Everybody does love Ethan and watch it each week to see what he as well as all the other cast members are doing.. THIS IS CRAZY AND THE NEW WRITTER OR WHOEVER PICKED UP THE SHOW JUST MADE A REALLY BAD MOVE.. Ethan isnt even one of my fav’s its just he is now part of the show a major part, how do you just say well I think his character ran its course, ummm you think what about the fans of the show..

Talk about cutting the ratings cord! Ethan is 90210, 90210 is Ethan. HOW COULD they just get rid of him that way. ETHAN is more intresting of a charachter than TY, Dixon, Navid and Liam. He displays alot of potential and everyone knows it. He has a way with the audience and cutting him is more devastating then ending a soap operah, or recruiting a new face to play dylan! its pure nutts!!!! CW needs to take back control and SAVE ETHAN WARD!!!!

This is rediculous, why do they always have to mess with a great thing!!! Argh!! Why take away the Eye Candy???? Well I hope he goes on to help a show become more succcessful than the new 90210. oh and trust me CW…you do not want to take off the Alum’s! You can kiss all your jobs goodbye!! Why not get rid of Annie that whiney little snot! They do this with all the shows with high ratings…make you wait weeks for new episodes come back and screw it all up…just like Desperate Housewives!!!

I can not believe the new writer is doing such crazy things. I got on board with 90210 because of the fact that some old characters were returning. Yes I fell in love with show aside from that but I still want to see them. AND I can not believe that they feel Ethan has run his course. I love his character and it stupid to get rid of him so soon. I will watch the first episode next season but if it is not up to par then I will probably let it go.

I am 29 and watch the show because I grew up with the original 90210 and love seeing the old characters! I have fallen for the new characters too like Ethan and just to kick him off now is already making me think I will stop watching next season. Like the poster Amanda said, this is giving me Desperate Housewives flashbacks, I absolutely loved the show the first season and did not miss an episode (as it has been with 90210) but four shows into the second season I turned it off and never clicked back.

    Hello all,
I guess Sinclair has not heard the old saying; if its not broken don’t try to fix it. Changing the format now you risk loosing all of the older fans, plus writing out Dustin Milligan is a mistake!!! I guess time will tell if Sinclair knows what they are doing.

I agree with john, if its not broken dont fix it, Dustin is the best part of 90210 And i will miss him terribley.. although there may be many new exciting things happening it wont be the same without dustin. and i want him to stay so badly. and i hope SINCLAIR comes to her senses and lets him stay… i love dustin and want him to be on television.. and on that show.
    Thanks for reading.

I think that a lot of draw for the show is similar to the old 90210, a core group of kids that evolve over the seasons together. Pulling Ethan out after one season is not cool. This head writer wanting to do a 360 from the first season that worked is careless. The show was a hit, we loved the kids you put in it and now you drop one because the character ran his course in one season? The writer needs to have more imagination than that. We get that Beverly Hills youth are into fashion, nice cares, etc. That culture was very evident in the first season. Not sure why the wirte thinks that needs to be stepped up more. I read she wants to introduce a new main character that is a tennis player…Yikes! And a surfer girl. Also yikes! Keep Ethan please and give him a tennis lesson if you want. As for the oldies, Donna, Kelly, Brenda etc. They are what makes the show great. I agree that they should not be the core of the storyline but they definitely need to be apart of it. It would be a bad mistake to drop them out. The chemistry between Donna and Kelly was one of the best shows to date. I will have to see what this new all powerful writer comes up with next year but so far it sounds a bit sketchy.

getting rid of ethan is a really stupid thing to do. he has so many fans and some of them probably wont want to watch 90210 anymore. im also having doubts about watching season 2. i really enjoyed season 1 and i dont want any characters leaving especially not ethan and kelly. a show does need some older characters to make it more interesting. you cant just get rid of major characters! whatever Sinclair had in mind, season 2 better work out though i have a feeling it wont.

  15. c’est un bon film …continud les acteurs et les actrices trés b1 !!!!!ai love you !!!

I am sorry about Dustin Milligan leaving the show. BUT I WANT TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO LIAM!!!!! When he we left him he was going to military school! I know that Matt Lanter (Liam) will be a recurring character on season 2 though so i am very happy about that : )! But I hope that Liam and Naomi will get together, because I think he is good guy, but I want him to sop cheating on her though. I hate her sister Jen, she is AWFUL.

I just find it kinda weird that they cut out Ethan just as his character begins to develop from this shallow jock person to a sensitive guy who is trying to discover who he really is.

I totally think that the one that they should remove is Annie. Her character is REALLY annoying!!!

This new writer is setting the show up for failure! I’m 24 & never watched the old 90210 but this new one i’m lovin it & to get rid of any of the characters is very stupid! The show was jus fine! I love it, but with these changes i’m pretty sure i’ll stop watching. I hate when ppl come along & mess up a good thing!

I don’t like Ethan’s character he was a waste of time. Completely useless. His “relationship” if you would call it that with Silver is and was pathetic shallow and meaningless, it brought the character of Silver down and I doubt I will see her the same way again. I’m glad Ethan’s leaving he was what you would call the anchor of the show dating anything in a skirt.

Although it’s nothing personal with Dustin. I’m glad we will be waving goodbye to him.

Ok i fell in love with this show the first episode just like the old 90210 and from what I have been reading about season 2, I dont even know if I am going to be watching it anymore. I can’t believe they are taking Ethan off of the show I think that is a huge mistake. How can they say the character has run its course when they were just getting something started between him, Silver, and Dixon?! Where is that going to go now? And if it was Ethan that Annie hit like someone said previously I am going to be even more furious! I dont think the story lines are going to be near as good this season which really dissapoints me because I have been following the alums from teh first show and Annie since she was on Degrassi and if they screw all this up they will regret it big time. I think the ratings are going to plummit.

  21. Chelsy

     /  August 8, 2009

    ps.

If they make Annie a psycho brat this season its going to make her long time fans (watching her from Degrassi) not happy because its going to make people not like her character anymore.

seriously?! no, seriously?! i mean… it surely is something else. i can’t believe they just fired him because of the screenwriter. come on! he was supposed to get with silver – ‘the character has run it’s course’…. COME ON!

i think this sinclair whatever should be fired!

THE NEW SCREEN WRITER IS A TOTAL BITCH FOR DOING THATT!!!!

  26. Jessica

     /  September 9, 2009

I watched the first episode of the second season and I couldn’t believe that dustin milligan was not in it. So I checked online and found out it was true. I just can’t believe that a single screen writer could do that. And what is wrong with her cutting jennie garth and shannen doherty out! the new season is probably gonna be terrible all because of one ignorant person. Ethan’s character was just starting to develop, I was actually looking forward to seeing how his and silver’s relationship unfolds. But I guess we can’t anymore 😦 The only person who should get fired is sinclair!

  27. Hilary

     /  September 10, 2009

I am so pissed!! This new director is an idiot and just ruined the whole show!!! Why is she trying to change it, it was fine the way it was was!!! Ethan was the only good guy character and they set up that whole thing with him and silver and made everyone wait weeks to figure out what happens, only to totally rip everyobe off. I am so pissed. This show has probably lost so many fans and the show is gonna go under big time.

  28. Katie

     /  September 11, 2009

No offence but I’m glad he’s gone his character was a waste a jerky guy pretending to be good all his I want change, and “every man’s an island.” He was just like a jock high on weed, he was dumb, annoying and always always struck by cupid’s arrow. I’m glad he was just phased out! Matt Laner is hot.

Why are you guys so upset? I aqree w/ Sinclair , Ethan Has Run His Course. I’ve Been Watchinq Season 2 && its Waaaaaaaay Better ThanThe First Season. More, Excitment , More Everythinq. iEven Cried When Annine Was In Her Little Moment. Sinclair Great Job. Im Sure Ethan Will Find Hisself A Good Show , He’s An Actor For Chris Sake !

  31. I have never, ever left a message, blog, etc. on ANY site. But this is a real shame. I have been having a “90210 DVR marathon” tonight and catching up on episodes one after another I am wondering WHERE THE HELL IS EVERYONE??? I had to get on here and see what has happened to what once was a good show! I ONLY tuned in for the alumni (okay and for SOME of the youth stars) and am bored to tears with the new writer’s “views”. I really wish someone read these comments/reviews….I hope the show fails miserably to send a message to that woman. Clearly she wasn’t and isn’t a fan of the show. And not signing Ethan was silly. In fact, I am deleting it from my DVR as I write this. Total BS.

tbh im not really sure wth is going on, ethan was kind of annoying but he was part of 90210 and what a crap way to exit!im actually quite upset about it,he would have met someone new,or something i think he has not run his whatever. but i would like to see sinclairs idea of a new 90210,but i actually loved season 1 he was cool, but slightly annoying, just like annie!!

Only seen the first and second episodes of Series 2 but Sinclair’s made a good move ditching the Dona, Kelly and Brenda who were way out of their element. She knows how to bring fiesty, sexy and sharp to the table.

The first series looked like it was on a tight budget and whilst enjoyable to watch, focused on too many things. The only interesting aspect were the new, spunky characters.

Now, if Sinclair has dropped Annie instead of Ethan I would have been over the moon! Both are only limited to two facial features but at least he’s visually more appetising.

Inject 90210 with a witty script and it’ll be on a par with Gossip Girl.

BRING ETHAN BACK in an suprising and unexpecting way it would have everyone wondering !!!

I’m so disappointed! I’ve actually been waiting a long time to finally see the new 90210 here in Norway. I’ve always been a huge fan to Beverly Hills ! I have to say that I love season 1 of 90210, until the end. I just dont get it. When it’s “finally” Ethan and Annie, why mess it up so fast!? And.. ETHAN AND SILVER? And the worst part.. why the hell is Ethan taking off the show? He is 90210, together with Annie -not that I mean that they should stay together forever, but why mess up the end of seasons 1 that bad? I will not see one more episode of 90210 before Ethan is back. This really sucks! I’d loved 90210 in the beginning, but think it’s ending so sad, not just for the persons in the series… but for us that watched and loved it. Loved having Ethan in the show. Get him back… And keep having Kelly and Brenda too.. that’s the reason why I start watching the following show…

okay its 2011 now and im still watching 90210 and i love it, believa me. but im still kinda pissed that they got rid of ethan! how the hell did he run his course?? things were just geting started with him and silver and he was changing and trying to figure out who he was!!!! seriously can they just bring ethan back for like their last semester in high school? please seriously BRING HIM BACK! please!!!

UGH!!! kicking ethan out would be a wrong move…..everybody would want to know how ethan-silver relationship would go…

I think taking the character Ethan of the show was a huge mistake…I thought he was spontaneous and made his character quite riskque at times but also conservative at times…he had the whole pkg…taking him off the show was a HUGE mistake….and a lot of viewers will agree…and myself!!
